]]>His latest creations, however, are breathtaking large-format (151cm x 101cm) images of bird wings, one white and one black.
Together, the large image format, the granular paper and the stunning pen-work produce an effect of incredible power and strength. The viewer is seduced into thinking of eagles and swans – elegant, powerful, silent travellers of the sky.
When viewing Paglia’s work, our eyes refuse to accept what our brains know to be true: These are indeed not photos but meticulously produced hand drawings where the granular effect is achieved by layering tens of thousands of touches of pen until the perfect effect of light and shadow emerges.
Paglia uses felt-tipped pens with intense, fade-resistant, waterproof black pigment with tips ranging from 0.1 to 0.8mm. The paper is extra-white, cold-pressed 100% cotton at 640 gsm.

]]>The master of pen and paper, Milanese artist and photographer Alessandro Paglia, has taken an extremely close look at some thoroughly sexy vintage automobiles.
The results of his hundreds of hours of painstaking pen work are as mesmerising as ever.
His latest feat is an exclusive series of one-of-a-kind artworks depicting iconic cars ranging from a 1937 Bugatti Atlantic Type 57 and a 1954 Mercedes 300 SL “Gullwing” to a 1970 Lamborghini Miura.
Working from his own photographs of the subjects, he creates a magical sense of 3D realism, reminiscent of, yet superior to, those very photos.
But, at the same time, the viewer is aware that he or she is looking not at a black-and-white photograph, but a pen-and-paper image created on heavy, grainy paper that is particularly suitable for depicting these classic subjects.
Together, the graininess of the paper, the sublime beauty of the vintage automobiles and the meticulous craftsmanship of the artist d evoke a sense of old-world class, dress-up times gone by, black-and-white films with dramatic stars.

While some of these originals survive in museums and private collections, only one singular pen-drawn, life-size drawing of the BMW R12 exists.
It is the latest creation of Alessandro Paglia, the Milanese artist and photographer whose photorealistic drawings of iconic pop-culture items and breathtaking bird wings we have written about before.

]]>The use of pen, unlike pencil, allows Alessandro to achieve richer, vivid tones and vibrant textures within his compositions. He utilises intense inky blacks to amplify the interplay between the natural light and his chosen subject. The rough surface of the paper further accentuates this effect. The technique he employs is relatively simple yet quite laborious in its execution, Alessandro says.
“I draw the subject with the pen, many pens for each illustration actually, by superimposing layers of chaotic lines on top of one another, until I achieve the right nuances in even the smallest details“. He uses felt-tipped pens with intense fade-resistant water-proof black pigment with tips ranging from 0.1 to 0.8mm. The paper is extra white cold pressed 100% cotton at 640gsm.
His method is normally not as simple as just reproducing what is seen in life. Alessandro selects and studies his subject carefully, taking it to the studio he distorts it, enhances it, submerges it, imbues a solid surface with a liquid finish, he breaks it or rebuilds it by combining it with other objects. He then shoots dozens of photos attempting to find that elusive perfect image in terms of composition and contrast of light and shadow.
“I want to get a surprise, I want to twist and deform the object’s story“. Alessandro then further augments this image with his own hand as he meticulously reproduces his subject in black ink on rough grain paper. Each illustration can represent anywhere from 50 to 250 hours of work.
Alessandro’s subjects are often iconic pieces of design history or pop culture. Each of us will be familiar with his subjects and relate to them in our own personal and unique way stemming from our individual experience and memories. However in Alessandro’s work we’ll find these objects subverted and given new context and meaning.
